REVIEW BY ANTÓNIO LOURENÇO. 20/01/2025
The film "ABSOLUTION" directed by Hans Petter Moland and starring Liam Neeson, portrays an aged personal drama where he plays the role of a former boxer. Due to not habitually wearing headgear during fights, he suffers from trauma, later developing encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease. Eventually, he begins to experience cognitive problems but tries to redeem himself by bonding with his grandson, advising him not to follow his footsteps, and reconciling with his daughter, exploring ethical dilemmas and past mistakes. This storyline is unusual as it contrasts with the typical portrayal of criminals and psychopaths who lack moral conscience and remorse. Despite its thriller-like tension, the film delves into emotional issues alongside action, showcasing Liam Neeson's remarkable performance as a dramatic actor. (Movie distributor NOS)
Director Moland, known for "Cold Pursuit," also addresses the impunity often associated with crimes due to brain injuries suffered by boxers, American football players, martial artists, and similar athletes. These injuries can lead to aggression, depression, memory loss, and cognitive issues like forgetfulness and decision-making difficulties.
Regarding motor problems, tremors, coordination issues, and muscle stiffness may also manifest. Notable cases include Muhammad Ali, known for boxer's dementia, and others like Mike Webster (American football), Chris Benoit (Wrestling), Aron Hernandez (American football), and Jerry Quarry (Boxing), who suffered from this condition.
In "ABSOLUTION," Liam Neeson's portrayal is praised for its emotional depth and darkness, focusing on themes of memory, guilt, and seeking redemption. However, the script includes some predictable police scenes. Secondary characters portrayed by Ron Perlman and Frankie Shaw are noted for lacking depth and development.
Other films addressing similar themes include "Concussion" (2015), "Still Alice" (2014), "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." These films explore various aspects of neurological and cognitive challenges, offering different perspectives on personal struggles and resilience.
